A SU School of Nursing high-risk maternity course is being developed with a planned launch in 2026. This course will include 3 separate high-fidelity simulations, one of which is a Preterm infant delivery and resuscitation. We presently do not have the technology to meet this need. Laerdal SIM Characters “Paul” is the only 27-week premature baby simulator that meets faculty requirements. The simulator was developed by a neonatologist and medical simulation design experts. Paul combines anatomically correct 3D-printed airways based on real-life preterm MRI scans, physiological and pathological breathing patterns, realistic internal structures, and lifelike facial and skin features.

The principal use of simulation-based training in preprofessional heath care education is to provide learners with the highest fidelity, near-real-world clinical scenarios possible.
