Support the Algonquin program on SU's Giving Day! Past gifts to Algonquin have helped cover the cost of new equipment, program costs for students in need, and the purchase of a 14 foot box trailer.
The Salisbury Global Seminar: Canada - Algonquin Canoe is a study abroad freshman seminar (IDIS 100) that teaches how to solve problems using skills and perspectives from a variety of disciplines in a true wilderness setting. The twelve-day experiential component of the course (which will return August 11-23, 2023) takes students to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, where students spend a week canoe-camping in the backcountry as part of small trail crews led by Salisbury University faculty, staff, and experienced students of diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
While the exact lessons learned are different for each trail crew, all learn how to pool their talents, knowledge, and experience to overcome challenges during their journey, cultivating an appreciation for different approaches as well as the natural environment. If you want to learn how to think outside the box, this is as outside as it gets!
As a wilderness experiential course, students will sleep in tents, paddle their own canoes, and hike on Park ranger-maintained trails around waterfalls and other natural obstacles. No previous camping or canoeing experience is required—all necessary skills are taught during the course—but a moderate level of physical fitness makes the journey more pleasant. Advice on how to prepare and a detailed packing list are provided to all students. The chances of seeing a moose are about 50-50; the Perseid meteor showers take place while we are in the dark-sky backcountry (and sometimes the Northern Lights are visible); and the geology and birding are outstanding.
