Deirdre Adina Campbell Scholarship

Deirdre Campbell graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Salisbury State University in the spring of 1998. Unable to afford all of the textbooks required for a biology major, she often relied on the kindness of fellow classmates, copious notes and prayed that professors would put a copy of the required textbook(s) on reserve at Blackwell Library. Often having to work during and in-between semesters only added to the difficulty of achieving a noteworthy GPA. Proving that GPA is not necessarily an indication of academic ability, commitment or potential, Deirdre went on to complete graduate school with honors and works as an educator, small business owner and clinical research professional.

Financial hardship makes it more challenging to be academically successful due to additional stressors and the uncertainty of access to all available resources. Realizing that those in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community frequently contend with this obstacle, the inspiration to create this scholarship was born. Deirdre firmly believes that we are all blessed for the sole reason of being a blessing to others. The hope is that this scholarship will alleviate some of the financial hardship and make college more accessible for students committed to uplifting the underserved BIPOC community.

Delmarva Public Media

Give to Delmarva Public Media on Giving Day!

Salisbury University’s WSCL 89.5FM is the original home of public radio on the Delmarva Peninsula. It’s been almost 40 years since WSCL took to the airwaves in 1987 and we’re still going strong! Along with SU’s WSDL 90.7FM and WESM 91.3, broadcasting from University of Maryland Eastern Shore, our three public radio stations make up Delmarva Public Media.

Delmarva Public Media uses a powerful network of three public radio broadcast stations and associated online formats to strengthen access to and experience with arts and culture on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by providing curated national and home-grown music content, supporting other local arts organizations, and training the next generation of arts & culture media leaders through internships.

Some of our interns work on a weekly student-produced newscast called the Five Minute Fly-by, which airs Mondays at noon on WSDL. Students also produce segments for our flagship local current affairs show, Delmarva Today, and for the local news slots during NPR’s Morning Edition.

And other interns work on our newest student-focused initiative called Intergenerational Beats. This project pairs a professional journalist with a student journalist to cover important stories that impact the people and the places that make up this region. We have two “beats” right now—Arts & Culture and History & Communities—with more to come.

DPM students are covering the topics most important to people in this area while gaining skills in research, interviewing, script writing and productions. They’re also developing essential career skills like teamwork, professionalism, and critical thinking.

Your gift will help equip the next generation of media professionals and enhance the coverage for Delmarva. Join us in supporting DPM and SU students!

Department of Communication

Give to the Department of Communication on Giving Day!

The Communication (COMM) Department offers a diversified curriculum and helps prepare students for a wide range of careers and graduate study. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts with five concentrations: Community and Professional Communication, Multi-Media Journalism, Public Relations and Strategic Communication, Media Studies and Media Production. We also offer a COMM minor for students wanting to complement degrees with important communication skills such as interpersonal communication, managerial communication, intercultural communication, meeting management, media writing and production, and media analysis and criticism. The department is dedicated to providing students with first-hand experience in the burgeoning global communications market. Department faculty routinely offer courses in Scotland, India and for the first time this summer, Chile for COMM majors and other SU students who wish to participate in off-campus learning. We need your help to provide our students with the everyday skills that go beyond traditional academic learning. Your gift, no matter the size, combined with others, will help the Communication Department give our students a superior knowledge of how communication impacts society and our experiences. Your investment will help provide updated and improved experiences for students.

Disability Resource Center (DRC)

Give to Disability Resource Center on Giving Day!

We are committed to fostering accessible learning opportunities and environments for qualified students with disabilities. We aim to inform, educate and support students with disabilities in ways in which allow them to achieve their educational, career and life goals, on the basis of their personal skills, abilities, interests and values.

To support our mission, we serve as a resource for students and instructors alike and value student self-empowerment, self-direction and self-determination, while believing that access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities should in no way compromise the intended learning outcomes of any educational opportunity or environment inside or outside of the classroom setting.

Dorothy Ruxton Chemistry Student Research Fund

Please consider making a gift on SU's Giving Day!

Established with a gift from Wight and his wife, Victoria Rasmussen, the Dorothy Ruxton Chemistry Student Research Fund will provide travel grants and professional development resources to allow SU chemistry students to present their research at conferences and network with established scientists in the field.

“My mother was a staunch advocate of education – not just for her own children, but for all people,” said Wight, who spent much of his career as a professor of chemistry before transitioning into administrative leadership. “I can think of no better way to honor her legacy than to help expand educational opportunities for SU students.”

“This generous gift will provide benefits that could be life-changing for students,” said Dr. Michael Scott, dean of SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology. “The professionals they meet at conferences and symposia could be a gateway to job interviews, invitations to participate in research teams, graduate school referrals and more.”

In past years, most chemistry students who have attended or presented at national conferences have had to pay their own way — a burden for some, according to Dr. Stephen Habay, SU Chemistry Department chair.

“The Dorothy Ruxton Chemistry Student Research Fund can really eliminate that barrier for students,” he said, adding that may be even more important once academic conferences return as face-to-face events following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Diane Davis Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship

We celebrate Dr. Diane Davis’ contributions to the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program at Salisbury University. During her 35+ year career at Salisbury University, Dr. Davis-Hayes taught hundreds of students as a professor.  She took on the role of clinical coordinator and over the course of 25 years in that role, she grew the number of clinical sites from just two to over ten.  As clinical coordinator, she also developed and organized all of the student checklists and manuals that our students are all familiar with now.  Under Dr. Davis’ leadership, MLS students have consistently scored at or above the national average on the national credentialing exam for several years.  These are just a few of the many accomplishments that Diane achieved during her time at SU.

We are excited to announce a new, endowed scholarship in Diane’s name, which was established by her loving husband and children to honor her legacy and her dedication to the MLS program. The Dr. Diane Davis Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship will provide renewable scholarships to current student(s) pursuing an undergraduate degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

·         If you graduated with your Bachelor of Science in MLS, you can thank Dr. Davis.

·         If Dr. Davis ever wrote you a letter of recommendation for a job and/or graduate school, you can thank her.

·         If you have a better understanding about immunology and clinical biochemistry, you can thank Dr. Davis.

·         If you got through all of your clinical rotations, you can thank Dr. Davis.

·         If you worked with updated equipment that helped to better prepare you for a career in MLS, you can thank Dr. Davis.

·         …and for many more reasons, we thank Dr. Davis!

In honor of Dr. Davis, please consider a gift to the Dr. Diane Davis Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship.

Dr. Lori DeWitt Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Lori DeWitt Memorial Scholarship. Lori J, DeWitt, 57, of Hebron passed away on June 22, 2021 from complications of esophageal cancer. Her two-year battle with cancer was filled with strength, courage, and faith as she knew, in the end, she would be going home. Lori was born in Fontana, California and lived in California, Minnesota, North Dakota and, for the past fourteen years, Maryland.

Lori graduated from Norte Vista High School in Riverside, California in 1982. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from California State University, San Bernardino, her Master’s in English Education from Loma Linda University (Now La Sierra University), and her Ph.D. in Communication from North Dakota State University in 2007.

Lori was an accomplished public speaker and had qualified for the national speech and debate tournament in both high school and college.

Being the daughter of two career educators, her career path inevitably took her into education. She began her career as a high school teacher in Southern California where she taught English, speech and debate, and coached the high school speech and debate team. She also taught Special Education and loved working with students with special needs. Lori briefly worked in the television media industry hosting a local cable home improvement show. Ultimately, Lori decided on a career in higher education and moved with her family to Salisbury University in 2007 where she joined the department of Communication. She served on various department, school, and university committees and, at the time of her death, had just transitioned out as the Chair of the department.

Lori had a passion for travel. She spent important years of her life living on the West Coast, in the Midwest, and on the East Coast. She traveled with her family extensively throughout the USA. While serving on the faculty at Salisbury University, she led multiple study abroad trips to both Guatemala and Scotland. Additionally, she and her husband presented at international professional conferences in The People’s Republic of China and explored setting up study abroad programs in England and Northern Ireland. Lori was very involved in her church and traveled on numerous mission trips to Peru and Macedonia.

The memorial scholarship has been created in Lori’s name to support Salisbury University Communication majors with high financial need to embed an academic exchange or travel program either abroad or in the USA as part of their college career. Lori knew the educational benefit of travel and wanted as many students as possible to participate in these programs. Please give today to remember Lori’s legacy and support her love of educational exchange and travel.
