Paul S. Sarbanes Lecture Series (PACE)
During his time in office, Senator Paul Sarbanes was a friend to Salisbury University, helping to secure funding to expand educational opportunities in the then-Department (now School) of Nursing and to establish the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business’ international business curriculum. In 2002, he initiated the Paul S. Sarbanes Lecture Series through SU’s Institute of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), bringing some of the nation’s most prominent legislators to campus. In addition to Senator Sarbanes, high-profile guests included civil rights icon Representative John Lewis, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Senator Richard Lugar.
As a national leader on civil rights, a cosponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act, an ally of environmental conservation (including legislation to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay), and a staunch supporter of consumer protection and corporate reform, exemplified by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Senator Sarbanes embodies the values in which we believe at SU. He was a role model to our students and many others in the greater community. Take this opportunity to honor the impact Senator Sarbanes has made in his hometown of Salisbury, the great state of Maryland and across the country with his decades of selfless public service.
Performing Arts Center
Expected to open within four to five years, the new center would feature an auditorium with seating for up to 1,000, making it the second largest indoor performance space in the county, after the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. Other planned amenities include a music and theatre space with seating for up to 450, a convertible dance studio, scenic and costume design facilities, and dressing rooms, as well as classroom and rehearsal space.
“This new venue would be a showplace not only for Salisbury University, but for downtown Salisbury and the entire county,” said SU President Carolyn Ringer Lepre. “The potential benefits for the local arts scene, and the regional economy, are extraordinary.”
The building is expected to have a significant annual economic impact on the region, beginning with its construction. The facility also could mean new opportunities for area businesses, as expanded SU cultural programming and the possibility of professional productions from national and international touring acts are expected to draw more customers to downtown Salisbury.
In addition, the venue could help enhance pre-existing events like the annual Maryland Folk Festival, and would be available for community use.
“SU’s music, theatre and dance ensembles are renowned throughout Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula,” said Dr. Maarten Pereboom, dean of the University’s Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts. “While we enjoy inviting the community to our performances on campus, it’s exciting to know that, in just a few years, we may have an even bigger and better venue to showcase the talents of our students, our faculty and our community partners in a facility that would place us on par with our peers throughout the region.
“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

Philosophy
Give to Philosophy on Giving Day!
The Department of Philosophy offers a program leading to the Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. Students are trained to develop their ability to think critically and to examine fundamental questions about the nature of the self and the world, and thus to establish a foundation for intelligent action in the world. Students are exposed to a variety of philosophical perspectives and asked to philosophize.
We need your help to provide our students with an understanding of philosophical perspectives and how they can help answer fundamental questions about the world. Your gift, no matter the size, combined with others, will help the Philosophy Department provide a unique learning experience to our students. Your investment will assist students in hosting discussion panels and traveling to conferences.
Philosophy Cafe
A friendly space for exploring diverse viewpoints, the Philosophy Café aims to facilitate genuine dialogue, mutual understanding, and self-reflection among the Salisbury community.
The Café is free and open to the public. It meets once a month during the school year, with a new question for every session. It is sponsored by the Philosophy Department and moderated by Philosophy Department faculty.
Questions from past meetings include:
- Can we really understand each other?
- What, if anything, separates a human from a machine?
- Do we need religion for spirituality?
- Does one’s worth depend on their contribution to society?
- Does true love exist? Would the world be better without suffering?
- Is nature inherently valuable?
- What makes something authentic?
- Can we reinvent ourselves?
Please consider a gift to the Philosophy Cafe today!
Physics
Give to Physics on Giving Day!
The Physics Department offers a multi-track program of study, giving students the flexibility to pursue a challenging curriculum of inspiring courses best suited to their individual dreams and chosen career. A major in physics prepares students for careers in a variety of high-technology fields, teaching and further graduate studies in physics, engineering, medicine and other fields. Students can complete the physics major in one of four ways: general physics track, microelectronics track, secondary education track or 3-2 dual-degree engineering program. Taking classes is not the only experience available in physics. We provide undergraduate research opportunities because they are important to the advancement of student understanding, allowing the student to apply the techniques that an active hands-on environment promotes.
We need your help to provide our students undergraduate research opportunities assisted with new technology and resources. Your investment no matter the size, combined with others, will reinforce the program's goal of preparing students to work confidently and effectively in physics or a related field, to develop the power to think critically, judge soundly and communicate effectively.
